Tracked stair climbers offer two major advantages over stair climber trolleys:
- They are more stable and safer
- They usually have a higher load capacity
Tracked electric stair climbers are very stable because the weight of the load is distributed over the entire length of the tracks and not centred on the wheels.
This makes it much safer to transport on stairs. Another advantage is that the operator does not have to balance the load.
In addition, tracked electric stair climbers are usually fitted with an electric motor and generally have a higher load capacity than wheeled electric stair climbers.
For this reason, tracked electric stair climbers are suitable for transporting heavy items and materials on stairs.
Their limitation is that they are usually bulkier, heavier and less manoeuvrable than two, three or four wheel motorised stair climbing trolleys.

The advantages of stair climbing trolleys are their manoeuvrability and light weight. They are usually better for manoeuvring on stair landings, for example when a 360-degree turn is required. Wheeled powered stair climbers are lighter than crawler stair climbers and take up less space when transported, especially folding stair climbers.
Their main disadvantage is their precarious stability on stairs, as the operator must balance the load weight.
For this reason, even when fitted with an electric motor, these stair climbers are not suitable for transporting heavy goods.
